Adia May is the principal at the Law Office of Adia Z. May P.C., where she handles entertainment and sports law transactional matters, and she is licensed in New York and Illinois.

  • Educational Background

    Attorney May is unique in her training in that she earned a joint JD/MBA degree from the University of Iowa, College of Law, and the University of Iowa, Tippie School of Management, respectively. Before becoming an attorney, she earned her Bachelors of Business Administration with a focus on finance from Howard University.

  • Work Experience

    Attorney May began her legal career as a corporate associate at the 200 plus attorney national law firm of Wildman, Harrold, Allen, and Dixon in Chicago. She left the firm to pursue her dream to be an entertainment lawyer. Attorney May has experience on both sides of the deal.

    She worked as a Business Representative and Advisor in Entertainment Contracts at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Attorney May was responsible for clearing film and television productions, reviewing the chain of title, and advising business representatives in the theatrical and television departments on various production matters.

    After leaving SAG, Attorney May worked as the Director of Business and Legal Affairs at Codeblack Entertainment. She was the sole lawyer responsible for structuring, drafting, and negotiating talent, distribution, and licensing deals. Attorney May also advised management and supervised outside counsel. She has also provided business and legal affairs services for:

  • Other Endeavors

    In her spare time, Attorney May co-founded Howardwood, a nonprofit organization with a mission to bridge the gap between Howard University students and professionals in the entertainment industry. Founded in 2010, Howardwood brought prominent stars and behind-the-scenes creative executives to meet with Howard University students in Washington, D.C. for various interactive educational seminars.

    Attorney May also produces content for film, TV, and digital platforms. Most recently, she was the associate producer on the web series “Milk and Honey.” She also previously served on the (NAACP) Image Awards Nominating Committee.

    Attorney May regularly speaks at events and conferences and is available for booking for upcoming speaking events.

  • Awards and Affiliations

    Attorney May received the 2011 Excellence in Innovation Award and the Nation’s Best Advocates: 40 Lawyers Under 40 award from the National Bar Association (NBA) and IMPACT. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Links, Inc.
